About the Doctor -Undergraduate Education: (include photo)

Dr. Giovannini grew up in the Mission District. He attended St Peter Grammar School (1945-1950) and St Ignatius High School (1950-1954) before obtaining a Bachelors Degree in Zoology at the University of California in Berkeley (1954-1957).

College:

Born to a laborer's family who could help very little to pay for higher education, to help himself through College he worked at a variety of jobs, mainly restaurant labor.

Medical School:

He was then able to attend Medical School at George Washington University in the Nation's Capital with the help of an Armed Services Academic Scholarship (1957-1961). While attending medical school, for room and board he worked nights as a laboratory technician at a local Washington D.C.Hospital (Sibley Memorial).

Internship:

After completing a year of internship at St Albans Naval Hospital in New York City (1961-1962), he practiced general medicine at the Charleston Naval Hospital from 1962 to 1965. He then returned to San Francisco, where he grew up and finished a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery with the San Francisco Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program.

Teaching:

In 1969 he began the practice of Orthopaedic Surgery in the same neighborhood that he has known his whole life, taking care of his own people. An Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California over some 10 years, he taught medical students and supervised residents over at San Francisco General Hospital.

Private Practice:

Fluent in three languages, English, Spanish and Italian, the languages of primary communication in his childhood, his Orthopaedic Practice in the Mission fills a need that otherwise would have gone unfilled. He passed his specialty boards in 1972; the first time that difficult and arduous examination was available to him and currently is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His major hospital of practice is St Lukes, a few blocks from the clinic.
